Terminal Despair
December 15, 2023 | Zeki Tan MY ‘25
Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, though certainly not the first to correlate despair with disease, described despair as “the sickness unto death.” [3] As I have come to understand it, despair is at its root a relational illness whose symptoms involve a breakdown of one’s relationships: the self to one’s self, the self to the eternal, and the self to one’s community.

March 22, 2023 | K. A. Malandain (Trumbull ‘26)
For there are still, in fact, good fruits that can be reaped from what you might be perceiving as a failure–those fruits being, a knowledge of our fallen nature as humans in the world, and a reminder of the difficulty of being a disciple of Christ. Climate Despair and Our Death Wish
January 20, 2022 | By Sharla Moody BK ‘22
Water surges past the Statue of Liberty’s waist, empties into the crowded rush hour streets of Manhattan. Cars, trucks, and buses surf on the wall of filthy water bearing down on terrified bystanders. The sky erupts with hail the size of basketballs, indiscriminately falling on people frantically running to take shelter. Enormous tornados engulf entire skyscrapers in Los Angeles, spitting rubble down onto screaming bystanders, the carnage raining down beyond any Old Testament judgment.
