In 2013, an eighty-three-year-old nun stood before a court facing an odd charge — the year prior, she had broken into a Tennessee nuclear site, in what was perhaps the largest security breach in US atomic history. She and her collaborators were part of the Plowshares movement, a pacifist Christian movement infamous for direct action against US nuclear facilities. Their goal, as it were, was to beat the swords of the military-industrial complex into plowshares, as alluded to in the Book of Isaiah:

Is Christmas already over?

Just five days ago, we celebrated the magical and joyous day of Christmas. For Christians all over the world, this day represents the birth of Jesus, the coming of the Messiah, the fulfillment of the Old Testament covenant of Immanuel, or “God with us.”

But besides the Christmas tree you still haven’t taken down, or the wrapping paper you have leftover in your closet, or the Spotify playlist full of Christmas songs you still can’t stop listening to--has this day left a mark on you on the 26th? The 27th? And skip three more days, today?

Some Thoughts after Nine Lessons and Carols, with Apology for Rambling

I don’t always visit Battell Chapel, but when I did, I was almost overcome with emotions at the Nine Lessons and Carols Service. This service, originally conceived at the King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, has been (at least during my three year at Yale) a regularity attended by many students and University faculties. If you have never been to this service before, I strongly implore you to do so next year, or watch the Cambridge live broadcast on BBC.
