Peace Without Any Answers

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does God allow evil? Where is God in the midst of suffering?
Growing up, my parents always taught me that it was okay, and even good, to ask questions about and of God. And although I wanted to believe them, I was convinced that if I questioned God’s character or His decisions, He would either meet me with wrath or be deeply disappointed. So, I made a subconscious decision to never question.
Witnessing Joy

In Isaiah 43, Yahweh instructs the people of Israel to serve as “witnesses” to the world that He alone is God. A few millennia later, the Jesus followers of today have inherited that same responsibility. I’ve walked with Jesus for several years, but it wasn’t until last spring that I began to actively explore what being a “witness” to God’s goodness and holiness could look like in my life.
God’s Suffering

In my previous encounters with this verse from Isaiah 53, my thoughts had always dwelled on the word “suffer,” then shifted to pondering God’s inexplicable reason for allowing suffering a place in the world. This time, as I read over it, my eyes rested on the “him.” It suddenly occurred to me that God put Himself through suffering. It was God’s will for His Son Jesus (i.e. God Himself [1]) to suffer perhaps the greatest suffering of all time: death through torture, crucifixion on the cross.

Second drafts for our print publication are due Oct 31st, so this meeting will cover common problems in the first drafts, what to think about for the second draft, and some ideas on how to make the pieces talk to each other and flow.

Content Editing Workshop

For our print publication, we will be conducting content editing in person. At the Elm Institute, and guided by Peter Wicks, you will be paired with a partner and will each edit each other’s pieces for content and discuss what worked and what didn’t.

For our print publication, we will be conducting copy editing in person. You will be paired with a partner and will each edit each other’s pieces for grammar and punctuation, and polish off anything else needed in the draft.
