How to Survive a Crushed Dream

During the winter months when the world is pulled into the deep sleep of hibernation, we look to the beginning of spring as a time for us to emerge from our rest into the light of longer days. The year is a breathing body moving between seasons of rest and productivity. But the world around us has turned it into a grinding machine that churns out work non-stop and year-round without fail. We have become trained to think about our lives like a perpetual season of spring, all fruit and flower with no room for barrenness.
Witnessing Joy

In Isaiah 43, Yahweh instructs the people of Israel to serve as “witnesses” to the world that He alone is God. A few millennia later, the Jesus followers of today have inherited that same responsibility. I’ve walked with Jesus for several years, but it wasn’t until last spring that I began to actively explore what being a “witness” to God’s goodness and holiness could look like in my life.

It was just after midnight last night. There were raucous shouts coming from Cross Campus. I craned my neck out the window and beheld throngs of college students mere inches from each other, merry-making, to celebrate the end of their two-week quarantine. I can almost imagine the conversations going on (at a distance of less than six feet, of course). “I was SO bored during quarantine. I want to live the full, real college life that I deserve, not this subpar quarantined version.”

My biggest complaint since freshman year regarding the Christian community at Yale was that there were too many. On one hand, I was ambushed starting my first days of freshman year with love, baked goods, smiling faces of people who wanted to be my friend and people who wanted to mentor me. As long as you make even the smallest effort to seek a Christian community, you are bound to find more than you know what to do with. There was a point when I was going to 4 different Bible studies, 2 large group meetings, and 2 church services on Sundays so that I could figure out where I would best fit in, grow, and be able to serve. #Christiancollegestudentproblems

If you were a tree, you would understand. If you were a tree, you would know what it is like to have roots. You would know what it is like to have a trunk. You would also know what it is like to have branches. And leaves. And fruit. As someone coming from somewhere extremely different, extremely strange, and extremely foreign, I have a vague idea of what it is like to be a tree.

Content Editing Workshop

For our print publication, we will be conducting content editing in person. At the Elm Institute, and guided by Peter Wicks, you will be paired with a partner and will each edit each other’s pieces for content and discuss what worked and what didn’t.
