The ER was overbooked, as it tends to be these days, so I was put in one of many beds lining the hallway by the nurses’ station. From my position, I could see and hear the rest of the folks in my section, which gave me something else to meditate on for those 14 hectic hours other than my own miseries. Almost every patient around me was in for depression or suicidal ideation, too

About one in three adults in the United States don’t get enough sleep. Being a college student about to enter the workforce, I know my lifestyle matches really well with this statistic. Most adults, including myself, are tired, working long hours, and needing more sleep.

After a gap semester spent living at home, I prayed for guidance into spring and tried to be genuinely open to whatever God might ask of me. Dear God,
I am always delighted to see a cross in ashes on the head of a person I know in passing. There are few signs more perfectly suited as a public declaration of faith in you: the ashes are quiet, yet bold, and its symbolic power is multiplied the more and more it is seen by others. Out of seemingly nowhere, people with this symbol populate the streets, workplaces, and schools.

Over the past twentyish years of my life, I’ve had fifteenish rooms. The longest I’ve called a room home is a little under three years. I used to complain about it a lot as a kid. “Why do we have to move around so much?” I’d whine every time I had to store up my belongings in boxes.
