When I was in kindergarten, I would joke with my dad about the gun under his bed. Can I get a gun license someday, Dad? I pleaded with him. When can I go deer hunting with you? By the time I was about ten, my eagerness to join the world of gun-holders began to falter. At age twelve, it was my father’s turn to joke with me. So when can we get your junior hunting license? He prodded. When can I teach you how to shoot?
Is Christmas already over?

Just five days ago, we celebrated the magical and joyous day of Christmas. For Christians all over the world, this day represents the birth of Jesus, the coming of the Messiah, the fulfillment of the Old Testament covenant of Immanuel, or “God with us.”
But besides the Christmas tree you still haven’t taken down, or the wrapping paper you have leftover in your closet, or the Spotify playlist full of Christmas songs you still can’t stop listening to--has this day left a mark on you on the 26th? The 27th? And skip three more days, today?

Can you feel it? Imagine the soft brush of cloth against your skin, the subtle settling of a snowflake on your shoulder, the gentle caress of a loved one. Listen carefully to the rush of a passing car and the flittering sound of voices rising and falling. Open your eyes to capture a passing cloud, a line of poetry, a smiling face. Let flowers and the smell of rain on concrete fill your nose. Taste the umami of life. It will settle on your taste buds like a familiar friend.
Some Thoughts after Nine Lessons and Carols, with Apology for Rambling

I don’t always visit Battell Chapel, but when I did, I was almost overcome with emotions at the Nine Lessons and Carols Service. This service, originally conceived at the King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, has been (at least during my three year at Yale) a regularity attended by many students and University faculties. If you have never been to this service before, I strongly implore you to do so next year, or watch the Cambridge live broadcast on BBC.

I thrive in solitude. I loved independence. I'd convinced myself I was a natural at serene self-assurance. Like a swan.
Often when I'm puzzled about where certain traits of mine come from, I just need to look back a bit. I grew up learning to handle most things myself. My parents never asked me if I had finished my homework before going to bed, if I had documents for them to sign that permitted me to watch PG-13 clips of films in class, which flight I booked online before I booked them.
