On Magic

Perhaps in the modern world we do not believe
in sorcerers or witchcraft. But we do know what Taylor
Swift means when she says that she was “enchanted”
to meet you. Magic and sorcery have not left this
world. We experience magic in modern love.
Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film based on the book
by Stephen Chbosky, ends with this beautiful, tumblr-
favorite voice-over by the main character, Charlie
(Logan Lerman): “This is happening, I am here and I
am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it.
This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story.
You are alive, and you stand up and see the lights
on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder.
And you’re listening to that song and that drive
with the people you love most in this world. And in
this moment I swear, we are infinite.”
To the One Who Not Only Speaks, But Listens

You and I worship a God who crafted the earth by simply speaking things into being, and planted entire planets in the universe, and sculpted the earth with mountains and valleys, and painted the sky with colors we can only dare to imitate. But I’ve always loved how beautifully David captures the intimacy of God. He wonders:
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8, ESV)
A Letter to Yale

Inspired by Revelation 2-3: An Imaginary Letter from Christ to His Beloved Servants at Yale
These are the words of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to my beloved ones at Yale, I know you perfectly (Jer. 1:5), every detail, every thought, every action (Ps. 139:2), for you were made through me (Col. 1:16), and still I also love you perfectly (Rom. 8:38-39), for you were made for me (Col 1:16). The Father has given you to me as a treasured possession (John 6:37) and I have pursued you with an unwavering love (Matt. 18:12-14) and through unimaginable sacrifice (John 10:11) to free you from sin and death. I am Yours, and You are Mine (Isa. 43:1-7).
5:00 a.m. at the Airport

Every time it's time to leave New Haven to go back to LA or leave LA to go to New Haven, I become extremely emotional and filled with anxiety. When I come home, I feel as if I am putting the past several months of my life on hold, unable to control or carry out my Yale life from home. When I go back to school, I am nervous for the new semester: how will I grow? what will I learn? who will I love?
The last question always fills me with a sense of dread (because love takes time, effort, and risk, and people too often disappoint). Yet it's the only question truly worth asking.

What does it mean to be a Christian at Yale?
Being a Christian at Yale means always relying on God’s grace and mercy to speak thoughtfully, act graciously, think critically, and love deeply, never losing sight of God’s plan for my life.
Being Christian at Yale, though, seems to not always align with what being a Christian should be.
Being Christian at Yale should be relying on God to guide every aspect of my life- you know, except those pesky post-grad plans. “I have to secure the bag, Jesus. You get it, right?”
Pursuing Justice as the Justified

The New Haven Green was designed by Puritan colonists in the 17th century as the center of life for their settlement in New Haven. Over the years, it has cemented its place in history as a site of deep historic, political, and cultural significance, from presidential addresses delivered to protests held during the American civil rights movement and Vietnam War. However, the uncomfortable truth today is that the Green is symbolic of New Haven’s staggering poverty rate and the ever-increasing disconnect between Yalies and New Haven residents.

We will be looking at the Yale Divinity School’s missionary collection, specifically focusing on letters from international ecumenical movements from America to China. We will be looking at how these relate to our theme of freidnship in a more nuanced way. We will be walking up from cross-campus at 8:30 am, but you can also meet at the YDS gates at 9 am.
